Abstract:
Environmental free surface flow processes encompass ocean waves, river flows, lake stratification, urban floods, etc. This seminar will first outline conservation laws for shallow water-sediment flows, which include both suspended sediment transport and bed load, then discuss their solution using a Godunov-type finite volume scheme. Numerical solutions will be presented for idealized sediment deposition, entrainment, and bed morphodynamic change due to a dam break over an erodible bed. Advances in bed load modelling will also be described, aimed at reducing the empiricism inherent in sediment transport formulae. The model will be used to examine the influence of bed slope on bedload. Use of a dynamically adaptive quadtree solver will be discussed for application to flood inundation and flow stratification. The seminar will end by considering the use of a simple numerical particle tracking approach to represent chaotic advection and mixing processes in shallow environmental domains.
