报告人简介

Dr. Channa Rajanayaka serves as the Manager of the Hydrological Modelling Group at The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand. With a PhD in Hydrogeological System Modelling and Simulation from Lincoln University, New Zealand, earned in 2003, he brings over 25 years of experience in hydrology, mathematics, and civil engineering research, consultancy, and teaching. As a Visiting Professor at Nagasaki University, Japan, since 2023, he shares his expertise with students. He also contributes to the Hydrosphere journal as a Review Editor. Dr. Rajanayaka has co-authored important documents such as the New Zealand Water Accounting Guidelines, and national guidelines for High-Flow Harvesting. Dr. Rajanayaka is renowned for developing hydrology and hydrogeology models and providing expert advice to central and regional authorities on water allocation, hydrology, and modelling. He is frequently called upon as an expert witness, offering technical evidence at hearings.

报告简介:

New Zealand is a water rich country by international standards and prides itself on being a 'clean and green' nation. However, the country faces challenges due to uneven spatiotemporal weather patterns, leading to issues like droughts and floods. Over the past three decades, there has been a significant increase in water demand, particularly for irrigation, with 80% of consumptive water use occurring during summer. Climate change impacts further exacerbate the uncertainty in providing a reliable water supply. Intensive agriculture has also impacted water quality. Balancing agricultural production with sustainable water use is crucial, alongside maintaining socio-economic and environmental equilibrium. This seminar explores recent advancements and persistent challenges in hydrological modelling in New Zealand, shedding light on innovative methodologies, technological applications, and research findings that inform future directions and strategies in managing the country's water resources.
